STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 10-year-old girl said she broke free from an attempted abduction by an ice cream truck driver in Mariners Harbor on Sunday afternoon, according to police.
The victim told her mother she was grabbed by the driver but managed to get away, according to a preliminary NYPD investigation. It was not immediately clear if the girl was brought into the vehicle.
After getting loose, the girl called her mother and NYPD officers were summoned to the scene at around 4:41 p.m., said a police spokesman.
The department conducted a canvass for the ice cream truck and later found it in the vicinity of Amity Place and Forest Avenue, just over one mile from the scene of the initial incident.
A person of interest was in custody as of 7:30 p.m., according to the NYPD spokesman, and the investigation remains ongoing.
