Recently, the Department of Homeland Security has said in order to alleviate crowding at the border, those making asylum claims could be transported to cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and Albuquerque. Typically, migrants who are allowed to stay in the country and make asylum claims are released to religious and non-governmental organizations when they are let go by CBP. The migrants then pay for flights and bus transportation to other cities. But the new model sends them to cities deeper inside the country before they reach their destination. U.S. Republican State Representative Yvette Herrell said right now is not the right time to let a large number of asylum seekers into Albuquerque. “I think it’s unfair to the people of New Mexico and again, you know, uptick in crime that now, you know, there’s the pressure we’re putting on our law enforcement, border patrol and now to just drop more people off into the middle of our communities. Where are we going to absorb them? What does that do to classrooms? How does that work in terms of feeding them, housing them, you know, medications, etc.?,” she said. But Democrats like Gabe Vasquez, who is running against Herrell, in congressional district 2 disagree. In a statement, Vasquez said in part: “Republicans like Yvette Herrell would rather continue to exploit the plight of asylum seekers for political gain and continue to drive a false narrative, rather than get to work with Democrats to find legislative solutions. We can start by fully funding immigration courts to reduce the backlog of asylum cases, provide a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers, and create a predictable, humane, and modernized immigration system that gives hard-working people who want to contribute to our country a pathway to citizenship. We can do all of this while also keeping our border safe.” It’s unclear when this program will start or how many migrants would be sent to Albuquerque. We reached out to the city about this in a statement they said, “The city of Albuquerque is an immigrant friendly city and has and will continue to support the faith-based organizations and volunteers who are providing hospitality to migrants who are legally seeking asylum in the United States.”
