Recently there have been some reports released on one of the most tragic episodes of American history: the boarding schools for Native American children that operated between 1819 and 1969. Native American children were forcibly taken away from their parents and sent to the schools. The purpose of the schools was simple: forcibly assimilate these children by destroying their Native American heritage. To this end in the schools the children were forbidden to wear Native American clothing, to speak Native American languages or to worship Native American religions.
