JACKSON, Tenn. — Our nation’s veterans face a great risk of homelessness, but the Department of Veterans Affairs shares that hope may be on the horizon.
Data shows that homelessness among veterans is down 11% over the past two years, and the VA has been actively working to keep up that progress.
Monica Diaz, Executive Director for the Veterans Health Administration Homeless Programs Office, says the VA offers outreach services and a nationwide call center designated to veterans experiencing homelessness.
Diaz says the department is also helping to provide housing to homeless veterans, and says they’re currently on track to meet an impressive goal.
“One veteran homeless on the street is one too many,” Diaz said. “So because of that, our secretary set up a goal this year to make sure that we provided no less than 38,000 permanent housing placements for our veterans by December 31 of this year.”
Diaz says if you know a veteran experiencing a housing crisis, have them reach out to the call center at (877) 424-3838 to learn more about the VA’s homeless programs.
