SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security was in Vermont Friday as part of an effort to recognize the service of some of the agency’s employees in the state and across the country.
Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made a brief stop Friday at a South Burlington office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a part of the Department of Homeland Security.
While in South Burlington, Mayorkas presented 12 department employees with a Secretary’s award. USCIS has about 1,600 employees in Vermont.
The department is honoring 876 employees nationwide and at a number of overseas locations.
“There is no higher calling than public service,” Mayorkas said in a statement. “The personnel throughout our department give so much of themselves to keep our communities safe and to better the lives of others.”
