August 22 (Renewables Now) – The US Department of Energy (DoE) will open three funding opportunities in the autumn, worth a total of USD 28 million (EUR 27.9m), to support research, development and deployment of hydropower technologies, including pumped storage.
The funds come from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“Funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will ensure that hydropower continues to play as big a role in our clean energy future as it has in our past,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm.
Support of USD 14.5 million will be directed towards innovative hydropower and pumped storage hydropower technologies, including technologies to retrofit non-powered dams.
The other initiatives will support studies to advance the development and deployment of a permitted pumped storage hydropower project and will ask for stakeholder insights to inform hydropower research.
At the moment, hydropower provides 31.5% of US renewable electricity generation and about 6.3% of total US electricity production.
