United Way of Mercer County is among nine school districts, three intermediate units, eight charter schools, two institutions of higher education and 22 community-based organizations.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) announced on Friday awards totaling over $19 million for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLD) Cohort 11 Grant.
United Way of Mercer County is among the recipients of the grant money. The organization will be receiving a total of $360,000.22
PDE’s Acting Secretary of Education, Eric Hagarty says the program helps provide students with a broad range of services and resources to help them achieve more throughout their schooling.
“Without this grant, students could miss out on some of the important opportunities and services that help them reach for success during their academic careers,” Hagarty said.
The 21st CCLC provides opportunities to low-income areas struggling to support students in their academic achievements and helps establish and expand community learning centers and provide academic enrichment, youth development and literacy programs.
Funds will provide students who attend high-poverty and lower-performing schools with additional services to meet state and local standards.
