GEORGETOWN, De. It was another first day of school for students in the First State. A hybrid of both in-person and online classes kicked off Wednesday in the Cape Henlopen School District and plenty of students and staff alike were eager to get back to learning.
“Students are rolling with it and just making it happen,” Schools Superintendent Robert Fulton said. “It’s connecting with students for the most part. This is where recess is, this is how recess is going to look. Everything was kind of a learning experience and getting to know the kids. But, overall a very positive experience.”
Middle and high schoolers learning in-person head back Thursday, adding to about 1700 students district-wide back in classrooms staggered throughout the week.
But state leaders say a return to classes full with kids will have to wait.
“This is a different interval and that is why it is better than the 7.1 percent, but again we are still here above five percent,” Delaware Governor John Carney said in a press conference. “We need to be under three percent to light up the green scenario and have greater safety in bringing children back to school.”
School also officially begins Thursday for the Indian River School District. Only pre-K and first grade students receiving in-person instruction will be allowed inside buildings.
The districts hope to incorporate more students in classes if deemed safe enough over time.
