Some borrowers received a notice from a student loan servicer on Thursday stating a student loan payment will be automatically deducted from their account on Sept. 1, the day after the pause on federal student loans is set to expire. The U.S. Department of Education later came out and said the message was an error, according to CBS News.
Student loan servicer Nelnet sent borrowers the email stating payments would be automatically debited from their account on Sept. 1 and to check their website up to three days prior to make any changes to the scheduled payment, according to the news station. Hours after the message went out, Nelnet sent a second email saying payments will remain paused due to COVID-19.
“Earlier today we emailed you that your student loan payment would be automatically withdrawn from your bank account on September 1, 2022,” the email read, according to CBS. “Please disregard that email. It shouldn’t have been sent. We apologize for any confusion or concern it may have caused you.”
