A power problem halted MBTA Green Line service in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood Friday evening, shortly before the first pitch of the Red Sox/Yankees game at Fenway Park. The MBTA said shuttle buses were replacing the MBTA Green Line service between Kenmore and Government Center due to a power problem near Kenmore.The affected stops included Government Center, Park Street, Boylston, Arlington, Copley, Hynes Convention Center and Kenmore.Normal service was restored around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Video posted to social media showed passengers walking through the underground tunnels to get to exits at a nearby station. The MBTA said a power problem was reported at Kenmore around 6 p.m. on Friday. “As a result, three Green Line trains became unable to move within the tunnels between Hynes and Kenmore,” a spokesperson for the transit agency said. The MBTA estimates that about 100 people were on each train. “These riders were escorted from the trains back to Hynes (two trains of riders) and Kenmore (one train of riders).”It was not immediately clear what caused the power issues. Shuttle buses temporarily replace Blue linePassengers heading to Wonderland from downtown Boston were forced to use shuttle buses for the final few stops, after a Blue Line train became disabled at the Suffolk Downs station. The MBTA said a broken pantograph on the third car of the train caused the train to become disabled. “During the initial investigation, personnel identified that the pantograph of the train came into contact with a piece of fiberglass that had fallen on the overhead wire,” an MBTA spokesperson said. “The initial investigation indicates this piece of fiberglass fell from a closed pedestrian walkway. The cause of the piece of fiberglass falling is under investigation.”The disabled train was removed a few hours after the incident and normal service resumed, the MBTA said.
