Clifton, N.J.: I have been reading the letters from Voicer Bradley Morris with equal parts amusement and disgust. If, as Mr. Morris states, “The natives are encouraged to celebrate their race…while foreigners are expected to assimilate,” there would be a whole lot more of us living in harmony with nature, more women in leadership roles and drum circles to unify us. We would have assimilated with Native Americans and adopted the respect they held for our planet. Rather than plundering the Earth for our profit, we might actually have a planet that is not suffering our greed and selfishness.
Also, to which ethnicity, culture and national identity should we demand immigrants assimilate? Irish-American? Italian-American? German-American? African-American? We are a nation of immigrants, so who decides? I happen to be an Irish-American but I’m not going to force anyone to join a hurling team or join me in daily readings of Yeats, Shaw, Wilde and Beckett.
I was confused about Mr. Morris’ reference to Sweden and the “increase of crime by Muslims and African criminals.” How not shocked I was to be led to a 2017 speech by Donald Trump. In an effort to refuse entry to immigrants, Trump spouted that Sweden was suffering because of their immigration policies. Unfortunately for Mr. Trump, this was incorrect and a complete fabrication. Even though he tried back up his reference by saying that he saw it on television, it was still wrong. So, Mr. Morris, in your effort to defend yourself, you might want to avoid using the ramblings of a known racist as your evidence. Maggie MacFadyen Doty
Manhattan: We must not falter in our support of Ukraine’s valiant counter-offensive to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s insidious war. While the Ukrainians have had some laudable victories, Putin, thumping his chest, orchestrates his troops that lay waste to bountiful Ukraine. This president of Russia is nothing more than a rabid dog. Susan A. Stark
Delmar, N.Y.: The United States and its allies will never recognize Putin taking control of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in the illegally annexed Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine. Along with the strongest condemnations, additional sanctions will be considered and with the national debt at just over $31 trillion, American taxpayers can easily afford to support the brave Ukrainians with more weapons and economic aid at the current rate of $2 billion a month for as long as it takes. As President Biden warned in March during his State of the Union address: “Putin has no idea what’s coming his way.” Alex Yatsevitch
Rockaway Park: A judge just ruled that it’s unconstitutional to ban guns from any neighborhood and is trying to block the gun-free zone that Mayor Adams established in central Manhattan in the theater district. This is unbelievable. What are those gun-toting complainers worried about, that a potential audience member to one of those very expensive theaters is going to come after them because they didn’t like the show? This is getting ludicrous. We must be the laughingstock of Europe. I’m wondering if anyone has researched if tourism to the U.S. has dwindled. I am sure it has. If I was a European, I would certainly have no interest in visiting the U.S. out of fear of getting shot for some sudden movement or if I sneezed. Ruth Graves
Rochdale Village: To Voicer Robert Brennan, who responded to Voicer Charlene Black by saying she promotes misinformation in her claim that the GOP wants to do away with Social Security and Medicare: They want to make it five-year bills, meaning every five years it’ll get voted on again — ample opportunities to do away with the necessary programs. You, sir, are a big part of what’s dividing this once-great country, but as a true right-winger, you must blame others. Saul Rothenberg
