President Joe Biden has nominated a Louisville native to a federal judicial post, and if she’s confirmed, she’ll be breaking barriers.On Wednesday, the White House released the names of Biden’s five new federal judicial nominees. This is his 17th round of nominees for federal judicial positions and his fifth slate of nominations in 2022.One of those names is Ana Reyes, who Biden nominated to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The Atherton High School graduate would be the first Hispanic woman to ever serve on that court, and the first openly LGBTQ person, as well, if she’s confirmed.”These choices also continue to fulfill the president’s promise to ensure that the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country — both in terms of personal and professional backgrounds,” the White House said in a statement.Reyes’ nomination comes after a recommendation by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. She said the Louisville native will bring much-needed diversity to the federal bench.”Ana Reyes has the intelligence, temperament, and integrity to be an excellent federal judge,” Norton said in a statement.Reyes is currently a partner at Williams & Connolly in Washington since 2001. According to her profile at the firm, she’s recognized as a “leader in this generation of rising legal talent, particularly in cross-border litigation and international arbitration.”Reyes was born in Uruguay and grew up in Louisville. She then went on to receive her B.A. from Transylvania University in 1996, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2000.According to the White House, Reyes served as a law clerk for Judge Amalya Kearse on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2000 to 2001.Toni Konz Tatman, communications officer for the Kentucky Department of Education, tweeted congratulations to Reyes after the news of the nomination.
