The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is planning a virtual town hall from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on veteran homelessness.
It will focus on sources that are available for veterans, according to a press release. An estimated 11 percent homeless adults are veterans, so the goal of this town hall featuring a panel of experts is to provide the information that can reduce that number. Details on how to register for this town hall can be found at this link.
The DMVA also wants to remind veterans of the following:
- The DMVA assists thousands of Pennsylvania veterans every year, but the No. 1 request it receives is for help locating a lost DD-214. That is a Department of Defense document, issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations.
- The DMVA is actively reminding veterans and their advocates to be aware of an increase in scammers looking to poach their VA pensions. Pension Poaching is financial exploitation targeting veterans and beneficiaries who are potentially eligible for VA pension benefits. The DMVA advises veterans that they should never pay for assistance applying for their military benefits. There are approximately 200 veteran service officers in Pennsylvania that work within organizations such as the DMVA, county veterans affairs offices and several veterans service organizations.
