Heavy flames shot out a fifth floor window on Mulberry Street just before 4 a.m.
Firefighters responded to heavy fire conditions, with flames shooting out the window. They were initially hindered by heavy clutter in the apartment.
Firefighters went door to door, evacuating residents from the 6-story building.
A 91-year-old woman was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead
Her 52-year-old son, believed to be disabled, was discovered dead in the fifth floor apartment during the firefighting efforts.
A 67-year-old home health aide for the disabled man escaped the fire apartment and is being interviewed.
Four residents and two firefighters sustained minor injuries.
One firefighter fell through a stair while evacuating the building. The FDNY said that firefighter was said to be “doing fine.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not suspicious.
