The Memphis meteorologist that sent out a racist tweet about Draymond Green will not return to FOX13, the station he worked at until the Warriors-Grizzlies series, according to a report from the Daily Memphian.
The publication cited “multiple sources in the industry” who confirmed that Joey Sulipeck would not return and a job posting on LinkedIn for the role Sulipeck held. Sulipeck’s own LinkedIn lists a new position, according to the Memphian.
During the Warriors’ 142-112 Game 3 win against the Memphis Grizzlies on May 7, the weatherman, who is white, tweeted, “And chew on this: Draymond runs his knuckle-dragging open mouth ALL GAME LONG, but mild-mannered Kyle Anderson disputes one call and gets ejected? Next level jackassery.”
He would later delete the tweet, and his entire account, after much backlash, including criticism from a fellow Memphis media member. Sulipeck has not appeared on a broadcast for his station since the incident.
It’s not entirely clear why it took more than three months to resolve the situation. Sulipeck sent the tweet on May 7, and the Memphian broke the story of his departure on Aug. 9.
The station did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Back in May, the station told SFGATE that the tweet “does not reflect the values of FOX13” and that “we take this matter very seriously and will take appropriate action pending a full investigation.”
Green ripped Sulipeck at the time, saying, “Are you surprised? Don’t apologize. STAND ON IT!”
The Warriors would end up defeating the Grizzlies in the second round of the playoffs in six games en route to another NBA title.
