STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — If you’re an NYC cross fitter, heavy lifter or aerobics enthusiast, your monthly gym membership might be breaking the bank. According to a new study, which analyzed data to discover the average price of breaking a sweat across 80 U.S. cities, New York is the most expensive state in the nation in which to get fit.
“The disparities in gym membership cost across the states is shocking to see — some areas have a much more accessible rate,” noted a spokesperson for totalshape.com, the fitness resource website that conducted the study.
The research, which included data culled from cost-of-living site Numbeo, noted that the average monthly fee for one adult New York City is $106.06 per month: $61.68 more than the country’s average of $44.98. Placing second is San Francisco, with an average monthly cost of $101.27, while Santa Barbara ranks as the third most expensive area in the United States for a gym membership, with residents paying $91.75 per month on average.
Boston, on the other hand, is the 10th cheapest area of the United States, with a monthly gym membership measuring in at $67.70, and Mesa, Ariz., wins the prize for most affordable city — the average monthly fee for one adult there is $18.29 per month.
