A New Hampshire Department of Transportation worker is recovering after his truck was hit by a passing vehicle Friday while he was parked on the side of Interstate 93 in Salem.Officials said the worker is expected to be OK. He was parked with his lights flashing when another vehicle slammed into his truck, officials said.”I heard a loud crash and then saw pieces flying in front of me,” witness Anthony Manzo said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life. It was horrific.”Manzo said he was approaching the Massachusetts border in Salem when he noticed a box truck swerve into the breakdown lane. “And there was a DOT pickup truck there, and he careened the whole side of it, and parts and pieces were just flying everywhere,” Manzo said. The impact left the DOT truck a mangled mess with the driver inside. “He, fortunately, was in the vehicle with the lights on and his seat belt on, so when his vehicle was struck at what is estimated at 70 mph, his seat belt assisted in him in being able to walk away from that,” DOT spokeswoman Eileen Meaney said. The DOT said its vehicles have been hit 25 times since January. State police cruisers have been hit nine times. Officials are reminding drivers of New Hampshire’s move-over law.”We’re going to enhance some of our enforcement efforts through a variety of different means,” state police Capt. Chris Vetter said.”These are somebody’s family members,” Meaney said. “These are our community members, and we need to keep them safe.”The other driver is also expected to be OK. State police are still investigating the crash.
