Rep. Frank Lucas captured the endorsement of former U.S. President Donald Trump Monday for Oklahoma’s 3rd Congressional District.
Lucas, R-Cheyenne, is only the second Oklahoma official to be endorsed by Trump in the 2022 election cycle. He endorsed Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt in March.
“Frank is working hard to grow our economy, encourage innovation, promote American farmers, defend the Second Amendment, and support our military and vets,” said Trump’s endorsement statement. “Frank Lucas has my complete and total endorsement!”
Lucas is the incumbent of the 3rd Congressional District. He was elected to Congress in 1994 and is the longest-serving House member in Oklahoma’s congressional delegation.
Wade Burleson, a retired pastor at Emmanuel Enid and former head of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, and state Rep. Sean Roberts have announced plans to challenge Lucas in the GOP primary.
Candidate filing begins Wednesday and runs through Friday. Primaries are scheduled for June 28.
The 3rd District represents much of rural Oklahoma, including the Panhandle, southwest and northwest parts of the state, as well as a northern portion of Tulsa.
During last year’s redistricting, the Oklahoma Legislature moved the 3rd District’s boundaries deeper into some Democratic parts of Oklahoma City. The district now includes parts of downtown, the Plaza District and Will Rogers World Airport, which were moved from the 5th Congressional District.
