BEMIDJI — The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded
with a $261,888 McNair grant for the 2022-2023 school year to help the university better serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students and those with disabilities to earn doctoral degrees.
According to a release, the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program provides grants to universities and colleges for projects designed to provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral studies.
“When we look at U.S. students studying to become our future physicians, professors, scientists and other crucial professionals requiring graduate degrees, many demographic groups are underrepresented, including first-generation college students and those from low-income families,” Nasser Paydar, assistant secretary of the Office of Postsecondary Education, said in a release.
Through McNair funding, opportunities can be provided including summer internships, seminars, tutoring, academic counseling and financial assistance among other support services.
BSU was one of 189 grant recipients representing 45 states and Puerto Rico with grants totaling $51.7 million.
