The U.S. Department of Energy is highlighting a first-of-its kind program to make homes and buildings more energy-efficient and environmentally protected on Seattle’s Beacon Hill.
With the neighborhood being in the flight path of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and right next to Boeing Field, noise and environmental pollution are constant factors for residents.
“A lot of these homes haven’t been updated, they could use the updates,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “It’s really a way to wrap our arms around the community to be able to direct resources to them.”
Granholm says that homes on Beacon Hill would be “buttoned down” so that they’re not wasting energy with leaky windows and doors, and bad insulation.
The Department of Energy plans to direct improved building materials to Beacon Hill to help with weatherization on some structures.
“It should start right away and hopefully those improvements will be visible to the residents there within the next few months,” Granholm said.
Beacon Hill is just one of 22 communities across the country that will be getting such help from the federal government.
