CARLSTADT, NJ — A special exhibition of historic model trains from the 1920s and 1930s will highlight the early development of model trains and the upcoming 100th anniversary of the New York Society of Model Engineers, a news release said.
Model trains will run at the Society’s building at 341 Hoboken Road in Carlstadt on Dec. 10, 11, 17 and 18 from 1 to 5 p.m., the nation’s oldest model train society said in the news release.
Featuring two massive model railroad layouts covering more than 5,000 square feet, the 96-year-old holiday tradition is “back on track” this year, the Society said.
Each scale layout features detailed scenic dioramas with realistic track work, and will include Thomas the Tank Engine and friends,and “one-of-a-kind” trains that were handmade by Society members. Model trains will run throughout the day on the respective layouts, the news release said.
Also on display will be the aforementioned special exhibit, the Society’s collection of historic railroad memorabilia, including illuminated tail signs that hung from many famous passenger trains, as well as railroad lanterns, steam locomotive bells and whistles.
