90 giant clam shells confiscated in Palawan
At least 90 pieces of giant clam shell were confiscated in El Nido, Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Thursday, Feb. 11.
After receiving a report from a concerned citizen, the giant clam shells were found hidden in leaves and trees in Barangay Sibaltan, El Nido on February 6.
The Coast Guard turned over the giant clams to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD).
The PCG also coordinated with the DENR and PCSD for further investigation of the incident.
Under the Republic Act 10654 or Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998, any individual who illegally took giant clams that is considered an “endangered species” will be fined up to three million pesos and can be jailed for up to eight years.
