It happened across from the Northeast animal shelter, one employee rushing out to try and help Salem police chief Lucas Miller telling us they believe the Ford Focus was driving in the wrong direction on Highland Avenue. At least two other cars badly damaged *** total of five vehicles involved in *** tragic tragic scene. There are some other injuries but none other life threatening. The medical examiner arriving. The man and woman in the car died on the scene. Highland Avenue shut down for hours *** Salem and state police reconstructed the crash using *** drone and investigating what led up to this likely wrong way crash. They had jaws of life, people just peeling back the roof and all that. They were trying to take the car apart to get the people out. People say they’re saddened by what they saw today and are thinking about the families impacted. There were three people in there in the car. So obviously there’s *** lot of tragedy in that family now and the police chief telling us *** second person was taken to the hospital from another vehicle. They are expected to be okay. Officials ID 2 people killed in Salem head-on wrong way crash as Marblehead man and woman
Officials have identified the two people who were killed in Wednesday’s wrong-way head-on crash on Route 107 in Salem, Massachusetts.Police said a white Ford Focus being driven by James Newhall of Marblehead was traveling north in the southbound lane of the roadway, which is also known as Highland Avenue, causing the multi-vehicle crash. Newhall, 91, and his passenger, Margaret Newhall, 55, both of Marblehead, were killed. A man who was also in the car was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two other people from vehicles involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital.The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. just south of Salem High School near the Northeast Animal Shelter.”When we looked out, we called 911 right away because we knew that it was bad,” Sharon Hodgkins, who works at the Northeast Animal Shelter said.”They had the Jaws of Life, people just peeling back the roof,” Raymond Dorski, a witness, said. “They were trying to take the car apart to get the people out.”The mayor said the city hopes to improve the roadway where the fatal crash happened. “My heart and thoughts go out to the family of those killed in Wednesday’s awful crash on Highland Avenue, and to the many who were injured. Tragedies like this are heart-wrenching and on behalf of the City of Salem we extend our deepest condolences to the Newhall family,” Mayor Kim Driscoll said in a statement. “While the investigation into the cause of this fatal crash is still ongoing, the City hopes to work with MassDOT on securing funding to advance much needed Route 107/Highland Avenue corridor project improvements.”
