Here are the top stories today in Miami:
1. The judge overseeing jury selection for a man who murdered 17 people at a Florida high school, Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, declared that the process will start over Monday, after prosecutors and defense attorneys argued that she made mistakes when she didn’t question 11 potential jurors who said they would not follow the law before she dismissed them. 2. Thousands of runners will link up on Thursday, April 28th for the return of the annual Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run. “Miami’s Largest Office Party” attracts more than 1,200 South Florida companies. United Way will benefit from the run. (CBS Miami)
3. A man was airlifted to a hospital after he was beaten and shot in southwest Miami-Dade Tuesday. Miami-Dade Police said officers responded to the area of Southwest 187th Avenue and Southwest 240th Street around 11:45 a.m. and found the man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. (NBC Miami)
4. Black South Florida residents and leaders are denouncing a change in Florida’s districting maps and demanding a change. “The Black community will not allow the governor to hijack this process on our backs,” declared District 35 Sen. Shevrin Jones, the only Black state senator representing Miami-Dade County, at a press conference Monday. (Miami New Times)
5. A resolution sponsored by Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee passed during the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, April 5th, to explore the impact of COVID-19 on transit employees. Many employees of the County’s transit system have remained on the front lines of this pandemic to provide essential transit services throughout the County, often putting themselves at personal risk.
