Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
- Pro-choice advocates took to the streets last night in protest of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. The protest was organized to march on Washington Square Park at 6:30 p.m. The latest activist action comes over a month from the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion in May, when thousands of protestors marched on Manhattan’s Foley Square and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. (AMNY)
- An NYPD officer was injured in a Brownsville shooting on Thursday afternoon. The officer was driving his cruiser down Pitkin Avenue when the suspect opened fire, striking the officer’s arm. The injured detective is expected to make a full recovery while the suspect remains at large. (Brooklyn Patch)
- Planned Parenthood of Greater New York has taken steps increase the availability of abortion appointments and procedures in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v. Wade. The New York chapter plans to implement an “abortion patient navigator” which will help out-of-state patients travel to New York for an abortion. Abortion was legalized in New York in 1970, and the projections of Roe v. Wade were codified into state law in 2019, meaning abortions will remain legal despite the decision being overturned. (Brooklyn Paper)
- On Thursday morning in Bath Beach, over a dozen cars were crashed into by a man in a stolen garbage truck. At approximately 4:30 a.m., Mario Casanova allegedly got behind the wheel of the truck and threatened the worker, before proceeding to hit 18 parked cars in a destructive joy ride. Casanova will face charges of robbery and driving while intoxicated. (NBC New York)
- A 25-year-old driver was arrested after hitting two police officers with his car on Thursday evening. Anjuwon Butcher was pulled over near Empire Boulevard for not wearing a seatbelt, before he drove into the officers. Butcher attempted to flee on foot before he was caught, while the officers were treated for minor injuries at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. (Patch)
