One person is dead after wildfires spread across southcentral Nebraska Saturday.The Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department chief confirmed Saturday one person died in the fire near Cambridge.The name of the person killed has not yet been released.Crews began fighting the fires Friday and their work has continued into Saturday. Evacuations orders for multiple communities were given on Friday as crews worked to fight the fire.The Furnas County Sheriff’s Department posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon saying,”From the area of Harry Strunk Lake or Roads 407 & 724 to Cambridge evacuate now or take cover.! Fire shifting from northwest towards Cambridge! City of Cambridge be prepared to evacuate! Residents in rural areas between Highway 47 and the Village of Wilsonville need to evacuate. This stretch extends five miles up highway 47 from the highway 89 junction. The village of Wilsonville is on evacuation standby.” The Furnas County Sheriff’s Department shared a post on Facebook that said “Mandatory evacuation for city of Cambridge. No waiting leave now” saying ” Get out now! Do not wait!! Please use extreme caution.” The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency activated a State of Emergency Operation Friday to plan and carry out a response to help aid in fighting the wildfires across Nebraska. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says throughout the last 24 hours fires have been reported in Blaine, Brown, Cherry, Cheyenne, Deuel, Dundy, Furnas, Hayes, Perkins, Scotts Bluff, Red Willow and Thomas counties. They add they are continuing to work active fires in Perkins, Hayes and Furnas, Red Willow, and Frontier counties. NEMA has confirmed one person has died and four firefighters have been injured. The Nebraska National Guard has also deployed one hand crew, two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, one UH-72, and several ground support trucks to assist with fighting the fires. The Wildland Incident Response Assistance Team has also deployed specialists to several of the fires.
