A Michigan man who beat the odds of winning the Mega Million lottery was forced to split the winnings with his ex-wife in the middle of his divorce. It seems divorced share 80m lottery with ex wife, court to decide
Richard “Dick” Zelasko was thrilled to learn that he won the $ 80 million jackpot in 2013, that is, until a referee told him that half of his winnings would go to his future wife, Mary Beth Zelasko, to whom he was involved. in a divorce agreement with Detroit Free Press reports.
Although Dick and Mary Beth, who married in 2004 and share three children, were separated for two years at the time they won the Mega Million, a Michigan appellate court ruled that the Pontiac native must pay his ex-wife the half of the profits, the divorce was not yet final.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Dick won the $ 80 million jackpot in July 2013, but took home $ 38,873,628 after taxes and deductions.
Referee John Mills, who was given the ability by the couple to make some decisions in the case, determined that Dick’s lottery winnings were “part of the marriage estate” and probably not his first purchased ticket.
Because of this, Mills demanded that $ 15 million be granted to Mary Beth, according to court documents. His divorce was finalized in 2018, reports The Free Press.
However, Dick’s attorney, Scott G. Bassett, argued in court that “Rich was lucky, but it was his fate, not Mary’s, that produced the lottery’s income,” according to the court filing.
Despite his argument, an appellate court did not seem to accept it and reviewed the decision last week, arriving at the determination that the case had no errors.
