World Series here? Oh, no
Re: “Newest diamond snags biggest gem — MLB working on plan to allow fans to attend playoffs, World Series,” Wednesday news story.
The paper on Wednesday shows the news (front page) that Major League Baseball is going to have Arlington host the World Series and they are considering allowing some number of fans. Now I’m a huge baseball fan and this would seem to be welcome news. But, wait … on page 2B (yes, second page of the Metro section): five more dead in Collin County from COVID-19 (10 this month alone). This while Collin County leaders continue to have a “lack confidence” in data supplied by the state.
Texas as a whole is on the list of states where cases are higher and staying high. Collin County is having three times the number of new infections of New York City (per capita), and Tarrant County is having four times the number. New York will not permit Texans to travel there without quarantining for 14 days.
And MLB is coming here! This is crazy. It’s sad that the leaders of MLB are being complicit with the science-denying leaders of our counties and state. Oh, this is a great economic opportunity? Greed is still one of the seven deadly sins. We’re seeing that in real time, aren’t we?

Re: “My experience with COVID-19 — After reporting on the virus for 5 months, I learned so much more going through it,” by Nic Garcia, Sept. 6 Metro story.
I want to thank you, Nic Garcia, for sharing your story about your experience with COVID-19. I think those who hear your story and see pictures of hospitals like Parkland will certainly believe how serious this virus is and follow the medical advice of experts.
It is unfortunate that without national leadership, we have failed as a country to get this pandemic under control. Many states have done a good job with the resources available to them. However, I do believe that mixed test results and no standardized testing requirements at each location are examples of what happens when there is no coordinated effort at all levels of government.
Our current administration has failed the American people by not taking responsibility for handling this crisis. It doesn’t matter where COVID-19 came from. It is here and we need a leader who understands what needs to be done and is not afraid to make tough, perhaps unpopular decisions to ensure the safety of the population.
Thank you, Nic, for making this crisis real for your readers. Your courage is greatly appreciated.

Trust science over conspiracy
Recently I’ve been reading comments on social media that the COVID-19 will end on Nov. 4. I didn’t know where that idea came from. Now I do. Michael Caputo, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was pushing the conspiracy theory that says scientists are conspiring against President Donald Trump, and warns of shooting in the United States if Trump loses the election. Caputo, now on leave, also said, “Democrats don’t want a coronavirus vaccine before the election to punish Trump.” This is with HHS support! Our president has said the same as well.
Conspiracy theorists are bad enough, but when they come from the president of the United States and his loyalists in top positions in government, it’s chilling. It’s also very scary to see Caputo instigating violence if Trump loses the election.
I’ll trust scientists any day over Trump, Caputo and HHS Secretary Alex Azar regarding COVID-19 and/or vaccines, and when they will be safe to use. Hopefully we can get a safe and effective vaccine quickly — before or after the election!

Adopt police reforms
Re: “City to pay $12M, reform police — Woman’s death sparked months of protests; still no arrests,” Wednesday news story.
How about all states saving $12 million and just adopting the Louisville, Ky., police reforms that came about because of this settlement? They all sound worthwhile…
