A homeless woman gave birth to a baby girl outside a subway station in below-freezing temperatures, German officials said.
Police saw the woman, 20, with a friend and the newborn baby not long after the birth at 5 a.m. Friday on a ventilation grate in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg, the DPA news agency reported.
The temperature was about 5 degrees Fahrenheit at the time.
The new mother and baby were found huddling in a sleeping bag for warmth. Police took them both to a nearby hospital for observation. Another German news outlet said the baby would be placed in temporary foster care.
