Elite Dangerous, Wreckfest and more coming soon to Xbox Game Pass
Xbox Wire's February 16, 2021 wave brought Code Vein, Wreckfest, Dirt 5, Elite Dangerous and three other titles to Game Pass across console, PC and Cloud through February 25.
Xbox Wire announced a new wave of games joining Xbox Game Pass on February 16, 2021, arriving across console, PC and Cloud gaming between February 18 and February 25 of that year. The lineup included the full-contact racer Wreckfest and the space simulation epic Elite Dangerous, alongside five other titles spanning role-playing games, an action platformer and a puzzle-shooter.
The full slate, per Xbox Wire's official post: Code Vein on PC (February 18); Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition on Cloud and Console (February 18); Wreckfest on Cloud, Console and PC (February 18); Killer Queen Black on Cloud and Console (February 23); Dirt 5 on Cloud, Console and PC (February 25); Elite Dangerous on Console (February 25); and Superhot: Mind Control Delete on PC (February 25).
What each game brought to the pass
Xbox Wire's own descriptions framed the range on offer. Wreckfest promised to "break the rules and take full-contact racing to the limit," while Elite Dangerous was billed as "the definitive massively multiplayer space epic." Dirt 5 was pitched as "the next generation of off-road racing," and Code Vein invited players to "team up with your friends and embark on a journey to the ends of hell to unlock your past." Killer Queen Black was described as "an intense multiplayer action/strategy platformer for up to eight players," Pillars of Eternity 2 as a game that "redefines the role-playing game experience for a new generation," and Superhot: Mind Control Delete around its signature mechanic: "Time moves only when you move."
A cross-platform push
The wave's spread across Cloud, Console and PC reflected Microsoft's push at the time to make Game Pass a genuinely cross-platform service rather than a console-only perk. Several titles — Wreckfest and Dirt 5 among them — arrived on all three simultaneously, while others were staggered to a single platform, such as Elite Dangerous on Console and Code Vein and Superhot: Mind Control Delete on PC. The wave rolled out over a single week, from February 18 through February 25, 2021, rather than landing all at once — a staggered release cadence Xbox Wire used regularly to keep the Game Pass library refreshing on a near-weekly basis rather than dumping an entire month's additions on a single day.
Genre range in one wave
The seven titles spanned racing (Wreckfest, Dirt 5), space simulation (Elite Dangerous), role-playing games (Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition, Code Vein), an eight-player action-platformer (Killer Queen Black) and a first-person puzzle-shooter (Superhot: Mind Control Delete). That range meant the same subscription added a demolition-derby racer and a slow, methodical space trading simulator in the same week — two genres that appeal to almost entirely different players.
What it signals
Pairing a physics-heavy demolition racer like Wreckfest with a slow-burn space sim like Elite Dangerous in the same week shows Game Pass's strategy in early 2021 was breadth over theme — stacking genres to give subscribers a reason to open the app regardless of mood, rather than building a wave around a single audience.
