BTS' j-hope will be dancing in the streets with upcoming documentary and soundtrack
In a pre-recorded appearance on bandmate Suga's show, j-hope announced a street-dance documentary and a six-song soundtrack built from the same passion that shaped his solo career.
BTS member j-hope revealed plans for a new documentary and accompanying soundtrack built around the street dancing that shaped his career, according to Rolling Stone and uDiscover Music. The announcement came in a pre-recorded appearance on "Suchwita," the online interview series hosted by his bandmate Suga, released while j-hope was serving his mandatory military service. "It'll be about my dancing and my story," he said, according to both outlets. "I think content regarding dance, which is where my roots are, is starting."
Rolling Stone and uDiscover Music both reported the project as an extension of j-hope's existing online street-dance video series of the same name, this time expanded into a documentary that follows him dancing with street dancers he filmed with during his travels. "It's literally like it's name, Hope On the Street — it's just J-Hope dancing on the street," he said, per both outlets' accounts of the Suchwita appearance.
The two outlets differ slightly on the date of the announcement: Rolling Stone dated its report to July 19, 2023, while uDiscover Music dated the Suchwita appearance itself to July 20, 2023. Neither outlet specified an exact release date beyond "2024" for either the documentary or the soundtrack at the time of the announcement.
A soundtrack built for movement
Alongside the documentary, j-hope described a six-song original soundtrack meant to match the project's dance focus. uDiscover Music quoted him calling the songs "really light music […] songs you can dance to," while Rolling Stone's account of the same remarks described the music as "really light" and danceable, with j-hope adding, "It's fun. For me, music is the most fun." Both outlets reported the soundtrack and documentary were expected to arrive together in 2024.
uDiscover Music also noted j-hope told viewers of the market he sees the project speaking to: "If you really dig into it, there are so many talented people, and it's a huge market," a line not carried in Rolling Stone's report.
The road from Jack in the Box to the street
Both outlets tied the announcement to j-hope's recent output. He released his debut solo album, "Jack In The Box," in July 2022, and both Rolling Stone and uDiscover Music connected "Hope On the Street" to his more recent single "On the Street," a collaboration with rapper J. Cole. uDiscover Music additionally noted j-hope enlisted for mandatory military service in April 2023, which is why the Suchwita segment featuring him was pre-recorded rather than filmed live.
What it signals
The framing across both outlets was consistent: this was not a pivot away from music but a return to what j-hope described, in both accounts, as his roots. Where "Jack In The Box" and its accompanying documentary chronicled the making of a solo album and a Lollapalooza headlining set, "Hope On the Street" as announced was oriented outward — toward the dancers he met on tour rather than toward the machinery of a solo release. That he chose to reveal it through a bandmate's low-key interview show, rather than a label announcement, while he was already in uniform, was itself part of how both outlets characterized the news: a personal project surfacing through a personal channel.
