Matt Eberflus isn’t a fool. He knew what he’d be judged on the moment he took over as head coach of the Chicago Bears. It was what he could accomplish with Justin Fields. Yes, his primary job is to make the team a winner. That will never change. However, Bears fans have long realized that the easiest way to win in today’s NFL is having a capable quarterback. Try as they might, Eberflus’ predecessors failed to reach this goal.
To his credit, the man understands his situation. He came up as a defensive specialist. That is where his expertise is. So being hands-on with Fields isn’t something he is qualified for. That said, he still knows it is his responsibility to help his quarterback however possible. He’s done this by sitting in on meetings whenever possible, learning how the quarterback sees the game, and providing input on how defenses work to stop them.
The Bears offered an exciting sneak preview of that new interaction for their third episode of the 1920 Football Drive series.
Matt Eberflus’ interaction with his players seems so calm.
He never interfered with what his assistant coaches were trying to teach. He stayed quiet, took notes, and interacted when it felt appropriate. There was no sense of being a control freak. Just a guy trying to help his players get better. Brief as the clip is, it was a nice look into the type of coach Eberflus is. There is no insecurity in the way he operates. The man seems confident in his own skin. Undoubtedly a byproduct of coaching for 30 years.
It will be interesting to see what other clips the new episode provides. Bears fans are anxious to see what the coaching staff has in store for Fields. Matt Eberflus hired Luke Getsy to get the young QB pointed in the right direction. Based on that clip, it sounds like they have a direction in mind and are walking him through the steps. Eberflus’ influence may help Fields get much better at reading defenses before and after the snap.
