When Paul George and Patrick Beverley mocked Damian Lillard from the Los Angeles Clippers bench for missing a pair of late-game free throws during the seeding portion of the NBA playoff bubble, the Portland Trail Blazers guard took it as “a sign of respect.”
If that was taking the high ground, then Lillard’s tweets Tuesday night were the real revenge.
“I guess I should extend this Cancun invite since I haven’t made my arrangements yet,” Lillard tweeted at Beverley with three laugh-crying emojis after the Clippers lost Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals to the Denver Nuggets despite once holding a 3-1 series lead.
Beverley, the Clippers’ lockdown defender, scored 11 points with six assists and five rebounds in the elimination loss. It wasn’t enough to avoid the social media wrath of Lillard, who also chided George.
“Look good to me,” Lillard wrote, quote-tweeting a post of George hitting the side of the backboard on a corner 3-point attempt.
George was 4-of-16 from the field (2-for-11 from 3-point range) and managed 10 points with five turnovers.
CJ McCollum, Lillard’s backcourt partner in Portland, also joined the online barrage at the Clippers’ expense.
“If they fly private they can get into Mexico for sure,” he tweeted. “Should probably get the big jet.
“I wonder if they packed before the game.”
McCollum also referenced the stance the Clippers took as a team to not finish the season following the protests inside the bubble.
“They did vote they ain’t wanna play no more. . . But I didn’t think they was gonna go out like that,” he wrote.
