By Linda Chiem (June 15, 2022, 9:29 PM EDT) — The U.S. Department of Transportation said Wednesday that nearly 400 crashes involving cars with autonomous driving capabilities occurred over the past 10 months, but experts say the still-limited data doesn’t accurately assess the overall safety of autonomous vehicles compared with human-driven ones.
The DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released two batches of crash data for cars with so-called advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, and cars with higher levels of automated driving systems, or ADS. The data includes incident reports from June 29, 2021, through May 15, 2022.
