WGAL has been interviewing the candidates on the ballot for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat.Alexandria Khalil is one of the Democrats in the race for this critical seat.”I’m running for the Senate because I’m an everyday person like your viewers. I go to work every day. I’ve applied for jobs. I’ve been laid off. I am a breast cancer survivor,” she said.Khalil serves on the borough council for Jenkintown, Montgomery County.”I have a real intimate view of the lives of communities,” she said.She got involved in politics during President Barack Obama’s campaign in 2007 and later became a Bernie Sanders delegate. She’s also on a Department of Health COVID-19 equity task force.When asked how well Gov. Tom Wolf handled the pandemic, Khalil said: “I think the governor did a fine job. Everybody’s a genius in hindsight.”Khalil didn’t provide specific proposals but called for a review.”We need to have a ‘lessons learned.’ What did we learn and what could we do better? I blame all levels of government,” she said.She supports a number of President Joe Biden’s policies.”Right now, we have a president that helped a Medicaid expansion through the American Rescue Act, helped 400,000 Pennsylvanians get Medicaid. He has the most important industrial policy in a generation: Build Back Better,” she said.Khalil is the daughter of Palestinian Muslim parents. She thinks Washington needs to adopt new policy in the Middle East.”I would like to see a more balanced approach to the Palestinian Israeli issue. From my perspective, I’m going to come in from the Palestinian perspective, which is not really existent in the United States Senate,” she said.Her grandfather fought for the U.S. in World War I, and she said she would stand up to any form of religious bigotry.
